The poem below was written during a period when I felt deeply misunderstood and I attempted to disappear into silence. What emerged surprised me. I’m sharing it for anyone who has ever been taught that being quiet was safer than speaking truth.

Silence Is Not Golden

Mirror Mirror on the wall..
.
Please tell me what you see
Before I crumble and fall

I ask, I pray on bended knee

Tired eyes look back at me

Lined to make them bright

Silly old fool, can’t you see

Youth is gone, its lost the fight

Mirror Mirror on the wall..
.

Reflect the face of my human doll

Silence is Golden is a lie

Be a quiet victim ‘til you die

Find a corner and curl into a ball

Or find the courage to rewrite it all

Mirror Mirror on the wall..
.

Reflect the face of my human doll

A lifetime of stories no one can see

Time to write, read, and give them life

Find the lesson so there’s no need

For the next generation to repeat my strife

Mirror Mirror on the wall...

I focus my eyes to finally see

I need to rise and answer the call

To embrace the real reflection of me
